Brief updates for faculty

LCC faculty colleagues —

We hope your term is going well as we wrap up this week!

Two quick updates —

1. LCCEA has provided a cease and desist notice to the College Administration regarding their attempts to have faculty members sign a “terms and conditions” form to serve as a faculty advisor to a student organization. The terms and conditions form would require a faculty member to receive no compensation or workload credit; absolve LCC from any liability; and require faculty to provide their own medical and liability insurance. We advise faculty to not sign this “terms and conditions” form or any other type of “terms and conditions” proposed by the LCC Administration. In addition to concerns about the content of these terms and conditions, the Administration’s actions indicate unfair labor practice activity, which is prohibited by state law.

2. LCCEA recently filed an unfair labor practice complaint due to the LCC Administration’s refusal to publish LCCEA report materials to the Board of Education, effectively censoring LCCEA and suppressing union speech. For example, the LCC Administration refused to publish a report on the fiscal sustainability of Oregon community colleges that was produced by the Higher Education Coordinating Commission (i.e., HECC) showing that LCC is “stable” on three financial metrics. (See p. 10 on the HECC report.)

This notice and legal complaint will help to preserve faculty rights under both the contract and the law in order to ensure that, as faculty, we are able to rely on our contract rather than face pressure individually to sign a document that is not consistent with our mutually agreed upon contract and to ensure that our collective voices remain protected within the venue of public meetings of the Board of Education.

Please see documents linked here for more details.

Together we are stronger. And together we stand for our students, our future, and our community.
