Important Information on RIF Lists for Contracted Faculty

LCC Faculty Colleagues,

I hope your Fall term is going well thus far. I know this is an incredibly busy time of the term — both on campus and off — but ask all contracted faculty to dedicate some attention to the RIF lists that were sent to you individually from HR on or about November 2. (Please note: RIF lists do not apply to part-time faculty. Part-time faculty should have access to PT seniority lists, which must be posted each year by May 15.)

I am writing because HR has indicated that there were some errors in the reports. For instance, at least 14 contracted faculty were not included on the RIF lists, so these will need to be corrected. (If you are in this category, you should have received a personal email about this already.) In addition, some faculty members have reported missing courses for which they should be certified. Furthermore, some seniority figures on the lists do not appear correct.

The RIF lists are used in the unlikely event of a reduction in force and are important for both protecting programs and individual contracted faculty job security as well to ensure that all courses that each contracted faculty member is qualified to teach are accurately included.

Please rest assured that LCCEA is working collaboratively with HR to ensure that the lists are corrected and complete.

Also, we ask that you please take action by reviewing your own lists. If you find that any courses are missing or if you find any other errors, there are a few steps (1-4 below) that you should take as soon as possible to help ensure that your own course certifications are correct and complete and that you appear with appropriate seniority credited on the RIF lists. If you are a contracted faculty member who previously served as a part-time faculty member, your years of service in a part-time capacity should be prorated and included in your seniority on the lists.

Steps for you to take now if there are any errors on your RIF list or course certifications:
1. Please fill out the RIF review form at: https://www.lanecc.edu/sites/default/files/hr/documents/requestrif.pdf
2. Once complete, please email the RIF review form to: your dean with CC to Sharon Daniel in HR at daniels@lanecc.edu and with CC to LCCEA at: lcceacontract@lanecc.edu .
3. If courses are missing from your list, please also fill out the course certification form at: https://www.lanecc.edu/sites/default/files/hr/documents/faculty_certification_form_10.27.15.pdf  You should list all the courses you are qualified to teach in your discipline/department on this form (e.g. all history courses for a history instructor).
4. Once complete, please email this form also to: your dean with CC to Sharon Daniel in HR at daniels@lanecc.edu and to LCCEA at: lcceacontract@lanecc.edu

Optional step if you are qualified for other courses outside your discipline:5. If you are qualified to teach other courses outside of your regular discipline or position for which you were hired (e.g. history instructor also qualified to teach political science), LCCEA recommends that you seek certification for those courses, which helps protect both you and your program. In order to do so, please repeat steps 3 & 4 above sending to the dean who oversees the discipline for which you seek additional certifications. In such cases, the dean may request additional information such as a C.V. and/or transcripts.

According to Article 10.9.5 of our contract, there is a period of thirty working days (from November 2 when reports were sent this year) in which we can initiate a grievance for correcting qualifications on your RIF lists.
Please keep us informed and let us know how we can support you by sending any updates or requests for assistance to lcceacontract@lanecc.edu.

Best regards,
Adrienne
